MAEA Curriculum Slam FAQs
When is the application deadline?
Applications are due March 6, 2022 (typically 3 ½-4 weeks before the spring conference.)
What’s the difference between the SLAM and a conference presentation?
SLAM presentations are FAST, once you’ve prepared your powerpoint you are good to go - there’s no additional preparation. SLAM presentations are back to back, and you’ll develop a camaraderie with other participants.
I don’t have anything original to present. I have a great unit that I teach, but I got the idea from someone else. Is that okay?
As Austin Kleon, author of Steal Like an Artist, says, "Nothing is original anymore, and everything is a remix of what has already been done." Credit the original source and elaborate on the ways you have made it your own.
Is there any discount on registration if you present at the curriculum slam?
There’s no discount on the registration for either regular or curriculum slam presenters.
I’m really nervous about public speaking. Any advice or words of wisdom for me?
The SLAM is a 20 slides in a 5 minute presentation. This incredibly faced pace leaves very little time for nerves! This is a great, fun way to experience presenting. You may find that you enjoy it more than you anticipated.
What is a contemporary lesson?
According to ART 21, contemporary lessons: are based on the use of themes/ big ideas, give students a variety of options, emphasize critical thinking and research, and value process over product. I teach choice. How can I be a part of the curriculum slam?
Choice is definitely an updated pedagogical practice. What are your secrets for making choice work for you and your students? How do your students get ideas? Share your enthusiasm!
